- On this day in 1860, the very first Pony Express delivery team left St. Joseph's Missouri en route to Sacramento CA. It arrived 10 days later.
- Richmond, VA was captured during the Civil War in 1865
- Harry Truman signed the Foreign Assistance Act and the Marshall Plan during the Cold War in 1948
- Jesse James was murdered in 1882
- The Unabomber was arrested in 1996
